Senior Winton Cup 2025 Report

Winton2025 Pic1

On the 12th-13th July 25 our senior regional welsh team came together in a rather warm Nottingham for the Winton cup. It was a great weekend of learning, competing and meeting lots of new people.  Thank you to everyone who took part and allowed us to come together as a team, you all fenced so well and really brought the welsh team spirit with you. Special mention to Emma, Charlotte, Florence and Ayse who all are under the age of 16 and for some it was their first ever senior competition they all fenced amazingly despite everyone being much older than them.

Whitchurch Fencing Club - Marc, the Victorious Vicar

Very well done to Whitchurch club member, Marc Walford, who took first place in Sunday’s `Clash in the Castle` open-air epee match, in Coity Castle, Bridgend, organised by Celtic Sword Fencing Club

Clash in the Castle 2025

Celtic Sword’s inaugural Clash in the Castle was held in the ruins of the beautiful Coity Castle on Sunday 22nd June 2025.  Whilst the black clouds above threatened rain, they definitely added some drama to the day, and thankfully it remained dry (if very windy…) for both the improvers match in the morning and the experienced match in the afternoon.

Veterans' Update #4

Hi all,

It was lovely to see some of you at the Welsh National Championships this past weekend. I hope those that were there enjoyed the event.

I wanted to give a head’s up to the events coming up this year as well as the latest on the Vet 4 Nations which is progressing well from an organisation perspective.

O’Sullivan Cup 2025
A second win for Maxwell Rowe-Haynes (Celtic Sword), in this popular competition, the 36th event in the series with 16 entrants (including 1 from Jersey).   Fast and furious throughout, Max led from the start, with a tie on 34 points at the end of the final round with Daniel Miller, (Bristol White Eagle).  This was settled  with  an exciting fence-off for first place, with Max getting the verdict. Results: Winner : Maxwell Rowe-Haynes (Celtic Sword) Second : Daniel Miller (Bristol White Eagle) Third : Andrea Bertelli (Whitchurch)   Full report - whitchurchfencing.co.uk/sullivan   ...

Over the weekend of 21st/22nd September the Veteran Winton Cup was held at a rather damp Billesley Indoor Tennis Center in Birmingham – we were one of 10 regional teams vying for the title from across the UK. I was proud to captain the team this year and with the usual spread of seasoned Welsh stalwarts, new caps as well as a couple of honorary Welshies (shout out to Helen and Dominique) we stepped onto the piste together - some of us with Daffodils in hand or more accurately on heads!
